We need to start having this conversation.  As Social Workers we find ourselves working with individuals and communities on a number of issues.  We have knowledge of how poverty, discrimination and abuse, and a host of other issues impact people.  Yet, we are not part of the national discussion about these topics.  When is the last time you saw a social worker participating in a panel on a news program?  How many social workers do you know who have testified before a congressional committee?  Why are there so few social workers involved in public policy?
