you're barely alive: How do you know if your... →
This reminded me of my foundation yr. After undergrad (I was a history major) I was trying to figure out what career to pursue. I was passionate about social justice and human rights so I wanted a career that allowed me to focus on those issues. What sealed the deal with social work was that wonderfully written preamble to the NASW code of ethics. So later on I was dismayed when I would hear...

A Call to the NASW: Mobilize and Prepare the... →
The NASW really needs to step up its game when it comes to organizing their membership. They are not good at getting the profession engaged in community organizing or meeting with legislators. It is sad when you consider the roots of the profession grew out of community work.

The Chief Complaint: Dr. Otis Brawley →
You have to read this article, especially the excerpt from his book.
The “chief complaint” on her chart at Grady Memorial Hospital, in Downtown Atlanta, might have set off a wave of nausea in a hospital at a white suburb or almost any place in the civilized world. It reads, “My breast has fallen off. Can you reattach it?”

This may shock you, but a 30-something single man recently had a run-in with a chick who was, like, really crazy, brah. This woman, whom he helpfully nicknames “Crazy D,” because her name starts with a “D” and she is totally crazy, did a number of crazy things.

From the link:
“If you subscribe to a color-blind racial ideology, you don’t think that race or racism exists, or that it should exist,” Tynes said. “You are more likely to think that people who talk about race and racism are the ones who perpetuate it. You think that racial problems are just isolated incidents and that people need to get over it and move on. You’re also not very...

Now that transgender individuals are just beginning to be accepted into the mainstream—Miss Universe, we’re talking to you, sweetie—a new niche of sexuality has emerged, and to certain generations or political alignments (ahem), it may sound like utter science fiction.

Social Work Education Is A Smorgasbord
I have been doing a lot of research in the last few days on non traditional social work jobs. [[MORE]] Half way through my foundation year I discovered that direct practice was not for me and I know there are other MSWs who feel the same way. I think MSW programs need to start providing more info to students about how to map out their career path and part of that should be letting them know all...

In what is just the latest in a series of Republican attacks on women, Senate Republicans are trying to eliminate the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). House Republicans already voted against women last month, and now a critical vote will be held in the Senate.
Twice before, VAWA was reauthorized with widespread, bipartisan support from both houses of...
