You’ve long suspected this, and now, here comes your old friend Science to back you up: homophobic people tend to be the way they are because they’ve got a little bit of The Gay themselves and were raised by authoritarian parents, according to a series of new studies.
There are some good quotes in this article. It upsets me that the question of balancing home life with work life are only put towards women and not men.
“I feel guilty when my son says, ‘Mommy, put down the BlackBerry, talk to me’ and that happens far too much. I think all women feel guilty. I think what’s interesting is I don’t know many men who feel guilty. I don’t know a lot of men who feel guilty for working full time, it’s expected that they’ll work full time…I wonder if there were more shared responsibility if more men would feel guilty too and women would feel less of it.”
The above article is an update. Her mother went to appeal to keep her out of the psychiatric ward and lost. She will be institutionalized because of her expression of her gender. She will be held until she conforms to male gender and then released to foster care, not her mother who was supporting her.
Please, if you haven’t signed the petition, sign it, reblog it, ask your friends to sign it. We’ve managed to get 40K signatures for a pageant model, we’ve only gotten 11K for a little girl about to have her life ruined. Lets get on the ball and spread the word.
I hate when people say well “I didn’t go into SW to get rich” as a response to discussions about SW pay and unions. It’s a way of saying “you made your bed now lie in it and don’t complain.” This is not about getting rich it is about fair pay for the work and expense we put into being SW. Most SW positions require us to have a Masters (this often leads to student loans) plus we have to pay fees to take, then maintain, our licenses & registrations. Add to this that we need to take continuing edu courses (even if your state does not require it you still want to do this to stay up to date). Despite this many in the profession can not maintain a household on what the average SW position pays. In what other profession do you obtain a graduate degree plus professional licensing and still not be able to live independently on a full time salary? All my peers in the filed are either living with their parents or are co-inhabiting with a partner who can split the cost of living with them.
i’m loling at the grade of a “D” for low stress hahahahahaha
No matter how positive an article is about social workers, there is always someone commenting at the end about how social workers remove kids when it isn’t necessary. Charming.
I am looking forward to being a social worker. One of my tutors once said in a lecture that she didn’t tell her daughter that she was a social worker until she was in her teens because she didn’t want her little girl going into school telling everyone “my mummy is a social worker” for fear that the other kids parents might tell them to not play with her.
Why oh why is social work so demonized?
This is definitely a reason to have noodles for breakfast.
Despite the fact that there’s scant evidence in the Bible that Jesus was an asshole who commanded his followers to bully gay children to death, a group of American Christian parents seem to think Christ has called upon them to act like jerks.
UNITED NATIONS — The U.N. crime-fighting office said Tuesday that 2.4 million people across the globe are victims of human trafficking at any one time, and 80 percent of them are being exploited as sexual slaves.
A paper published in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin (Zayas and Shoda, 2007) examined the influence of prior experiences on partner preferences. The researchers themselves constructed a believeable-looking “online dating service,” and thus were able to track the study participants’ preferences and selection of various partners.
Newly released security camera footage (video link) of George Zimmerman being led into the Sanford police station appears to contradict reports that he had been violently attacked prior to shooting 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.
Oh the fuckery. Why doesn’t the GOP just come out and say “Girls you are too stupid and emotional to make informed decisions so we will tell you what you can and can’t do with your bodies.” They do know that, as crazy as it may sound, women are allowed to vote. Do they think women are so stupid that they will vote for a party who has been working overtime to strip them of their rights? -Rachel
Oh hey, another terrible idea about abortion! This time, it’s coming from Alaska, the home of other terrible ideas like the Palins and the midnight sun.
“…..But, the part that doesn’t sit well with me is that all of the messengers of this message are all black too. I mean, it was only two weeks ago when almost every white person I knew was tweeting about stopping a brutal African warlord from killing more innocent children. And they even took thirty minutes out of their busy schedules to watch a movie about dude. They bought t-shirts. Some bracelets. Even tweeted at Rihanna to take a stance. But, a 17 year old American kid is followed and then ultimately killed by a neighborhood vigilante who happens to be carrying a semi-automatic weapon and my white friends are quiet. Eerily quiet. Not even a trending topic for the young man.” [emphasis mine]
Just one more about Trayvon Martin. I watched a video of a rally of college students outside the Seminole County court house and I didn’t see any white people. I actually said out loud “no white people? for real?” I did just re-watch it and maybe there are two white people I can see on the video? Either way, I just found it surprising. Everyone with a basic level of humanity should be outraged over what happened.
In another battle story from the war on women: this legislator thinks some women may not know the difference between rape and consensual martial sex. He believes before being allowed to have an abortion the doctor should send the patient home to really think about weather or not they were raped or just had sex.
This week, Idaho’s state legislature joined the ranks of state lawmaking bodies that have collectively decided that women are evil idiot children who can’t be trusted.
Very interesting article on the role single women may play in the Democratic party.
There’s a new voting bloc on the rise and, unfortunately for Republicans, it’s not the aging, disaffected, white male small business owner who hauled himself up by his bootstraps to teach himself accounting and microeconomics because he’d be damned if he’d sit through a single lecture at an elitist…
I have a very special project that I need your help with. I’m exploring the possibility of starting up/promoting a community-based private social services agency for LGBTQIA clients. I’m at the beginning of the planning stages right now (if this idea takes off, it won’t exist…
Did you know that the US still bans gay and bisexual men (or, as the gov’t likes to say, men who have sex with men) from donating blood. There is no legitimate reason for this policy to remain in place and Emily Horowitz & Josh Parrish are trying to get the federal government to recognize this fact. You can read the article they wrote for the Huffington Post by clicking on the link. They have also started a petition. -Rachel
Economists in Europe studied anorexia and body image. You will be shocked, shocked that they concluded in part that the “social and cultural environment” influences how women feel about their bodies, our understanding of what comprises an “ideal” body, and our behaviors: The first-ever economic…
Wisconsin, that land of beer, cheese, and Aaron Rodgers jerseys, has had a tough couple of years, government-wise. First, they elected a bunch of, from what I can tell, taxidermied badgers holding guns to state legislature.
More fuckery in Wisconsin. Due to the fact that the majority of single parents are women this legislation is yet another attack on women. -Rachel
My dear and sorely missed friend, Aaron Weintraub, posted this article on Yankee Parenting Styles. I think his insights could help us down here in Dixie..
…I suggest the following three values as a scaffolding to build a distinctly New England style of parenting.
Development is not linear. The pace of children’s intellectual and emotional growth varies over time. This should be reflected in flexible expectations about a child’s capacity to be the person we wish and work for them to become.
Independence is fostered through clear and consistent boundaries. Secure and healthy attachment is supported by behavioral expectations that are clearly stated and consistently enforced.
Respect is the foundation for a strong sense of self. The human mind is resilient and innately capable. By respecting children as competent and “whole” people, we inspire the self confidence that we respect in others.
