Currently under New York State law, a person can lose their job, be refused service in a restaurant, kicked out of a public library or evicted from their home simply because of how they express their gender. As a result of this discrimination, more than one-third of transgender New Yorkers have been homeless at one time and 74% of transgender people have been harassed at work.
Planned Parenthood is excited to be launching our new Tumblr that’s all about sexual and reproductive health – bodies, birth control, relationship issues, “is it normal for this to do this?” type things. In the coming weeks and months we’ll be sharing what we know, answering questions, and just… tumblring.
This reminded me of my foundation yr. After undergrad (I was a history major) I was trying to figure out what career to pursue. I was passionate about social justice and human rights so I wanted a career that allowed me to focus on those issues. What sealed the deal with social work was that wonderfully written preamble to the NASW code of ethics. So later on I was dismayed when I would hear some of my fellow MSW students expressing hetrosexist and ethnocentric sentiments.
For example, our Diversity professor was a GLBT activist who was the founder/executive director of a very successful organization that provided services and advocacy for the local GLBT community. During a class presentation a student casually used the term Dyke to describe a co worker of hers. She then got mad at the professor for taking her to task for this. Another student was upset because the same professor took issue with her final paper in which she tried to justify her reasons for objecting to same sex marriage based on her religious beliefs. BTW, she told us she was not homophobic because her best friend was gay. She just felt that her friend (and our professor) should not be allowed to marry because according to her religion marriage was between one man and one women.
I’m not sure what happened to the first student because she transferred, but the second student graduated. As far as I know she is out there right now practicing social work.
This morning I had an opportunity to review a website called, Socialworkhelper.com and must say I was thoroughly impressed with the mission of the site, its depth of content, and commitment to encouraging responsible use of technology within the Social Work profession.
The NASW really needs to step up its game when it comes to organizing their membership. They are not good at getting the profession engaged in community organizing or meeting with legislators. It is sad when you consider the roots of the profession grew out of community work.
You have to read this article, especially the excerpt from his book.
The “chief complaint” on her chart at Grady Memorial Hospital, in Downtown Atlanta, might have set off a wave of nausea in a hospital at a white suburb or almost any place in the civilized world. It reads, “My breast has fallen off. Can you reattach it?”
Republican lawmakers in Missouri are defending their controversial bill to ban the teaching of sexual orientation in schools as a way to prevent students from learning about the "homosexual agenda," the “heterosexual agenda” and bestiality.
The myth of a homosexual agenda rears is ugly head again, but this is the first of herd of a heterosexual agenda. Further more I want to assure Missourians that a romantic/sexual relationship between consenting adults of the same gender does not lead to bestiality.
Scharnhorst told HuffPost that teaching about LGBT issues would lead to other discussions. "There is no need to talk about Billy wanting to marry a goat," he said.
If that is how your mind works; if your mind automatically connects two people of the same gender being in an intimate relationship with Billy wanting to marry a goat, then you are the one with a problem.
Scharnhorst stressed that his support of the bill should not be confused with his personal beliefs about the LGBT community.
"I’m not bigoted," he told HuffPost. "I have friends who are homosexual."
This is just my personal observation but stating “I’m not bigoted. I have friends who are __________,” is usually an indicator that you are in fact a bigot.
Some Republicans are objecting to it, however, because it extends protections to LGBT individuals who have been victims of domestic violence, allows more battered undocumented immigrants to obtain visas and expands the authority of Native American tribes to prosecute crimes.
MAN: Have you heard about the woman’s violence act or something like that is working through the House?
STEELMAN: I’m not sure what that is because I’m not serving right now. …
WOMAN: Violence Against Women Act. …
MAN: You haven’t really heard about it?
STEELMAN: No. Not really.
Really? You know there was a time when anyone making a serious bid for public office knew the importance of understanding the issues. They actually bothered to learn about current events and what was going on inside the very governmental body they where hooping to be elected to.
This may shock you, but a 30-something single man recently had a run-in with a chick who was, like, really crazy, brah. This woman, whom he helpfully nicknames “Crazy D,” because her name starts with a “D” and she is totally crazy, did a number of crazy things.
“If you subscribe to a color-blind racial ideology, you don’t think that race or racism exists, or that it should exist,” Tynes said. “You are more likely to think that people who talk about race and racism are the ones who perpetuate it. You think that racial problems are just isolated incidents and that people need to get over it and move on. You’re also not very likely to support affirmative action, and probably have a lower multi-cultural competence.”
Let it be known: Color blind racial ideology makes you less likely to recognize racism and thus more likely to accept racism.
The CoBRAS was positively related to other indexes of racial attitudes as well as 2 measures of belief in a just world, indicating that greater endorsement of color-blind racial attitudes was related to greater levels of racial prejudice and a belief that society is just and fair.
COLOR BLIND RACIAL IDEOLOGY MAKES YOU LESS LIKELY TO RECOGNIZE RACISM AND THUS MORE LIKELY TO ACCEPT RACISM.
White people, your own fucking science is AGAINST YOU. Sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up. When you say you are color blind, you are telling POC that YOU ARE RACIST.
Now that transgender individuals are just beginning to be accepted into the mainstream—Miss Universe, we’re talking to you, sweetie—a new niche of sexuality has emerged, and to certain generations or political alignments (ahem), it may sound like utter science fiction.

In what is just the latest in a series of Republican attacks on women, Senate Republicans are trying to eliminate the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). House Republicans already voted against women last month, and now a critical vote will be held in the Senate.
Twice before, VAWA was reauthorized with widespread, bipartisan support from both houses of Congress. But now, Republicans have grown so radical they won’t even commit to protecting women from violence.
Join Senate Democrats and demand Senate Republicans stop trying to eliminate VAWA!
The other day I posted a link to an article about the worst states to be a women. Now I’m posting a link about the 10 best and 10 worst states for pay equity. It’s 2012 and women, on average, earn 23% less then men. Add to this that Mitt Romney, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, still hasn’t gotten back to us about where he stands on the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.
It’d be awesome if you could like/reblog this post, I’ll follow you. I’m really trying to learn about all of these things, especially about the nature of oppression in any group ever. There’s so much to educate myself on and it’s difficult for me to navigate!
With states governments from coast to coast working tirelessly to make sure no woman has sex for pleasure without suffering the consequences of blessed, precious motherhood, it may be tempting to believe that if you have a uterus, the entire country has become hostile territory.
I’m dating a man who I think I love, but I’m afraid he’s having an affair. He comes home late, he acts suspiciously, and he even has red lipstick on his collar. Should I confront him or just hope for the best?
UCONN’s Nancy A. Humphreys Institute for Political Social Work runs a yearly campaign school for social workers and social work students. The goal to to encourage more social workers to seek public office or to work for elected officials. The also have a news letter available for download as a PDF.
This ties in to my post about the pros & cons of social works versatility and the issues with how to define what a social worker does. This is regarding social work in the UK but it applies to US social work as well.
Social work in the UK has been experiencing a public relations nightmare in the past few years because of a few high profile case of children being murdered by parents who were already under investigation. Public sentiment has been that social workers handling these cases were repeatedly missing warning signs and not acting quick enough to remove children from abusive homes.
People drive me crazy. Humanity disgusts me. The general mentality and view on human beings needs to change. It’s time for people to realize that every human being is equal and deserves equal opportunities. I think there is a latent function in society of putting people on levels, and it’s…
Yesterday, Democratic operative Hilary Rosen dove headfirst into Category 5 crap tornado when she said that Ann Romney, a career stay-at-home mother, had “never worked a day in her life.” Twitter went to war over it.
