GENDA Passes NYS Assembly, Awaits Action By Senate... →
Currently under New York State law, a person can lose their job, be refused service in a restaurant, kicked out of a public library or evicted from their home simply because of how they express their gender. As a result of this discrimination, more than one-third of transgender New Yorkers have been homeless at one time and 74% of transgender people have been harassed at work.

Planned Parenthood is on Tumblr!
plannedparenthood: Planned Parenthood is excited to be launching our new Tumblr that’s all about sexual and reproductive health – bodies, birth control, relationship issues, “is it normal for this to do this?” type things. In the coming weeks and months we’ll be sharing what we know, answering questions, and just… tumblring.  We hope you like it! And we hope it helps.

This reminded me of my foundation yr.  After undergrad (I was a history major) I was trying to figure out what career to pursue.  I was passionate about social justice and human rights so I wanted a career that allowed me to focus on those issues.  What sealed the deal with social work was that wonderfully written preamble to the NASW code of ethics.  So later on I was dismayed when I would hear...

The NASW really needs to step up its game when it comes to organizing their membership.  They are not good at getting the profession engaged in community organizing or meeting with legislators.  It is sad when you consider the roots of the profession grew out of community work.

The Chief Complaint: Dr. Otis Brawley →
You have to read this article, especially the excerpt from his book. The “chief complaint” on her chart at Grady Memorial Hospital, in Downtown Atlanta, might have set off a wave of nausea in a hospital at a white suburb or almost any place in the civilized world. It reads, “My breast has fallen off. Can you reattach it?”
